Know How To Create Beautiful Spring Planters With Bulbs and Flowers

Spring Pot for a Shaded Garden

  • A 12-inch terracotta pot
  • Snake's head fritillary (Fritillaria meleagris)
  • Japanese tassel fern (Polystichum polyblepharum)
  • Peat-free, multipurpose compost
  • Crocks (pottery shards to aid drainage)

Directions:

  1. Put crocks (shards of pottery) into the bottom of the terracotta pot. Fill the pot two-thirds full with compost.
  2. Plant the ferns in the pot first, then add the fritillaries.
  3. Use compost to fully cover the plant roots.
  4. Pat the compost mixture down firmly.
  5. Water the pot well before moving it to its final destination.

Gather the following supplies to make your daffodil pot:

  • A 10-inch glazed pot
  • Pansies

  5. When the bulbs begin to flower in spring, plant crocuses and pansies around the edges of the pot.
  6. Fill any gaps with compost, then water the pot well.

Tulip Container

Tulips are gorgeous flowers that require very little care, so they're great for beginners. Here's what you'll need for your tulip container:

  • Large pot
  • Peat-free, multipurpose compost
  • Tulip bulbs
  • Gravel

Directions:

  1. Put a layer of gravel on the bottom of the pot for drainage.
  2. Add compost to just an inch or two below the rim of the pot and pat it down firmly.
  3. Plant the tulip bulbs with the points upward, about 2 inches apart.
  4. Cover the bulbs with more compost and firm it down as you go.
  5. Water the pot thoroughly and put the container in a sheltered position through the winter, making sure the compost doesn't freeze.
  6. In spring, move the container into the sunlight.

It should take you about 15 minutes to create this brightly colored pot.
